Biographical Profile:

  • B.S. in Business Administration from Northeastern Missouri State University (Kirksville, Missouri)
  • Graduated from Truman State University, School of Business (1964)

CONTRIBUTIONS TO THE CIVIL RIGHTS MOVEMENT:

  • At Truman State University, minority students challenged the student body, with the takeover of the student election process thus, becoming the first African American candidate for Homecoming Queen.   The National Guard was put on stand by alert for campus riots and unrest, and a Congressional Scholarship was in jeopardy!   She became a member of the Queen’s court, without incident.
  • Became one of the first African American women in department store management
  • Pioneer for African Americans in International Trade – May Department Stores/Macy’s for ladies apparel (India) in the 1970s;
  • Created several departments that are now nationwide entity with many retail outlets
